November 2007

In 2008 Lift Applications & Equipment will celebrate 20 years of serving lifting professionals and sister publication CraneWorks is not far behind. In recent months we have conducted numerous reader surveys to better understand how we can best serve you, our readers. We were happy to learn that you are pleased with the job we’re doing to date. You have asked us to continue our signature equipment application stories designed to help you get the most out of your crane and lift equipment. Our earlier surveys suggested that many readers want to see a single magazine covering the entire spectrum of crane and lifting equipment. Many cited the fact that a single source for lifting information would work better for them. We agreed and asked our readers what they thought of the idea of merging CraneWorks and Lift Applications & Equipment into one industry magazine. More than 80 percent of you indicated that you would like to see that happen. Your response was conclusive, and we are listening.

We are very pleased to announce coming this December the new Lift & Crane Applications and Equipment. Our new combined magazine will be larger, more comprehensive and cover all the products pertinent to access, light- and heavy-load lifting as well as rigging professionals.

As we develop Lift & Crane’s debut issue, we still want your opinions. With your feedback we can produce the best magazine possible!

We truly appreciate your dedication to these magazines and promise to do our best to continue to earn it.

All the best,
DAVE FRIEDMAN

Terex’s Norman Hargreaves awarded ASME Safety Codes and Standard Medal
Norman C. Hargreaves, Terex Corp.’s product safety officer, was awarded the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Prestigious Safety Codes and Standard Medal for his contributions to the advancement of safety and standardization in the field of mobile cranes.

“We are extremely pleased for Norman Hargreaves that he has received this significant recognition from his peers in the engineering community,” said Thomas J. Riordan, Terex president and chief operating officer. “He has devoted more than 20 years of work to the development of ASME safety standards for mobile cranes. No one is more devoted to the advancement of product safety in our industry. We are proud to have him on our Terex team.”

As senior member of the Terex product safety team, Hargreaves reviews product designs from a safety standpoint and is active in standards work domestically and internationally. For nearly 40 years, he has been involved in the design of cranes, excavators and other construction equipment, contributing to improving workplace safety standards. He represents the United States on the International Standard Organization’s Technical Committee for Lifting Equipment and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Michigan Operating Engineers. Hargreaves holds a national certificate in mechanical engineering from Hull College of Technology, England, and is a registered professional engineer in Ohio.

Scaffold Industry Assn. (SIA) targets safety through training and legislative action
Since 1972, the Scaffold Industry Assn. has protected and promoted the interests of scaffold and access equipment manufacturers, dealers and end users through training, education, lobbying and networking. Now, SIA works to further develop and promote scaffold safety at the 2008 CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2008 Event in Las Vegas, NV.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) ranks scaffold and access accidents as one of the leading causes of workplace injury and death. With a mission to promote safety in scaffold and access use, the SIA works together with legislative agencies throughout North America including OSHA, Cal-OSHA and the American National Standards Institute to develop better safety standards.

In 2005, the SIA formed an alliance with the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) in the United Kingdom, giving them the opportunity to introduce new training programs and gain entry to the European scaffold and access market.

The SIA’S many committees and councils represent specific access practices or products including aerial platforms, fall protection, mast climbing, permanent installation, supported and suspended scaffolds. SIA training programs are recognized as the industry standard throughout North America, provided through nearly 50 Accredited Training Institutes. 2007 marked the 35-year anniversary of SIA with many of its founding members still active in the association.

Maxiforce announces new products
Maxiforce announced it has added JCB (Const. Machinery) and CAT (416/426 Backhoe) hydraulic cylinder repair kits to its product offering.

“We are excited about this addition to our hydraulic cylinder repair kit catalog” said Paul F. Kelly, sales and marketing director for Maxiforce. “This is part of our continued commitment to expand our product offering, meet our customer’s demands and ensure we remain a trusted partner.”

Potain HDT 80 completes Pittsburgh expansion project
The Piatt Place, a well-known commercial site in downtown Pittsburgh, PA, recently underwent redevelopment to transform it to a high-end condominium and retail complex, requiring the help of a Potain HDT 80 self-erecting tower crane to finish the job.

The HDT 80 worked for sub-contractor Century Steel Erectors and helped add two stories to the existing five-story building. Local Potain dealer American Contractors supplied the HDT 80 to Century Steel.

“We chose the HDT 80 because lifting work had to take place in a narrow street. Space was very limited,” said Chuck McKee, Century steel project manager. “But with the small outrigger footprint, we could set up the crane and keep pedestrians moving.”

Construction work took place in 30-foot-by-30-foot bays. The heaviest loads were header beams, weighing up to 4,500 pounds each. The cranes also lifted 1,500-pound infill beams and bundles of metal floor decks weighing up to 4,500 pounds.

“We were very impressed with the portability and line speed of the crane, and the chart was fabulous,” McKee said. “It picked exactly what it said it would. At one stage we had to move the crane to another location, which took just five or six hours. If you look at that versus a normal top-slewing tower crane, there’s no comparison in terms of speed and ease. They are definitely an attractive prospect especially somewhere like Pittsburgh with its tight, narrow streets.”

Two speakers added to the Aerial Platform Symposium
Kelly Morstad and Denny Eckstine were added to the list of speakers presenting at the Aerial Platform Symposium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The show will take place December 3-5 at the Bally’s Hotel. Morstad will deliver “Measuring Training’s Effectiveness” while Eckstein will present “ANSI’s New A92 Regulations for Aerial Work Platforms.”

Palfinger takes over tail lift manufacturing global leader, MBB Liftsystems AG
Subject to the approval of the Austrian and German antitrust authorities, Palfinger will take over MBB, one of the top three players in the global market for tail lifts. This acquisition matches Palfinger’s strategy to grow through internationalization and diversification.

“MBB will considerably strengthen our tail lift product division, which is still very small. At the moment, we only cover a small area with the Palgate tail lift and the Ratcliff products. With MBB, we will be able to complete our product portfolio and enter markets in which we are not yet represented with our tail lifts, such as North America,” said Herbert Ortner, chief marketing officer.

Headquartered in Ganderkesee / Hoykenkamp, Germany, MBB Liftsystems AG offers a comprehensive range of technically mature products that are well established in the market, through the decades of experience that the company has had in the development, production and distribution of tail lifts. In the 2007 financial year, MBB will generate revenues of around 65 million euro, employing a staff of 260.

The headquarters of MBB in Germany will become the center of excellence for the continental European tail lifts of Palfinger. Ratcliff products, which are tailor-made for the British market and the MBB location in the U.S., will not be affected. The existing successful MBB management team will remain part of the company and will support its integration into the Palfinger group. MBB will be active in the hydraulic systems and service segment of the Palfinger group as part of the tail lift division.
